Curbside Organics Collection Coming in Spring 2018

The City is currently finalizing details for a voluntary curbside collection program. We will be sending out more information once the program is approved.

Did you know there's value in your food waste?

We already recycle our plastic, aluminum and cardboard at home, because it makes sense environmentally and economically. Now, it's also possible to recycle our food waste.  Rather than throwing away your food scraps, recycle them into a useful product- compost! With organics recycling, organics are collected and sent to a commercial composting facility for processing into high-grade compost for use in gardening, agriculture, and construction. Check out this video by Biz Recycling, a program of the Ramsey/Washington Recycling & Energy Board to learn about the process.

Organic material makes up approximately 30% of our trash. While organics breakdown quickly in commercial composting facilities, organics and compostable products don't breakdown in landfills, because there isn't enough oxygen. It's easy to reduce your waste by collecting organics for commercial composting.

Where to Recycle Organics

  1. Sign up for a free starter kit from Anoka County or the City of Columbia Heights (see below).
  2. Certified green compostable bags can be purchased at local hardware and grocery stores.
  3. Fill up those compostable bags with food scraps, pizza boxes, coffee grounds, paper napkins and paper egg cartons.
  4. When the bag is full, drop it off at a collection site.
