City Council Replaces Tree Ordinance with Tree Policy Print E-mail

boulevardThe Fridley City Council has repealed the City's tree ordinance, an ordinance that forbade the cutting of trees larger than three inches in diameter on City property without the approval of the Parks and Recreation Commission, the Planning Commission, and the City Council (a 2-3 month process).

In place of a tree ordinance, the Council has adopted a tree policy. The new policy governs the cutting, planting, and maintaining of trees on City property, and it gives the City Forester responsibility for dealing with diseased or hazardous trees, establishing minimum standards for planting of trees on City property. The policy also establishes that residents are not permitted to plant trees on City property, including the City right-of way in front of their homes, establishes standards for the spacing of trees and limits the placement of trees near utility lines.

City property is defined as City owned property, City rights-of-way, and City easements.
