The Community Development department ensures that quality development is achieved in Fridley. The department provides professional planning services with complete and efficient review and coordination of all commercial, industrial, single family, and multi-family residential developments; subdivisions; signs; conditional use permit and variance requests; and ordinance reviews.

The department also promotes commercial and industrial development opportunities in Fridley to expand the job base with livable wage employment opportunities and to increase the tax base. The department helps with the marketing of vacant commercial and industrial properties, builds and maintaining relationships with local business owners, and provides economic development services to the City Council and Fridley Housing and Redevelopment Authority. 

The Community Development Department is responsible for:

  • Administering the zoning ordinance, comprehensive plan and other documents that guide land use
  • Administering housing rehabilitation and energy efficiency programs through CEE
  • Issuing building permits and reviewing building plans
  • Administering subsidized housing programs for qualifying residents
  • Encouraging economic development and redevelopment efforts.

Staff members are planners, building inspectors, housing coordinators, economic development specialists, and support staff. There are 9 full-time and 3 part-time employees in this department.
